Seaside Stories

Seaside Skatepark

April 2, 2011 | by Becky Jensen

The sun is out! Time to go biking along the Prom, hit the beach, and just relax! Seaside is an AMAZING place to play if you have kids. The kids will enjoy flying kites, going to the Seaside Aquarium, spending time (and money) at the Arcade, or getting dizzy on the Tilt-A-Whirl (my favorite). There are many outdoor and indoor activities for kids of all ages! If you’re like me, and have super active kids in your life, then you’re looking for more adventurous activities for them to do.

I have a nephew who loves being active (Jujitsu, body boarding, etc). I’ve been trying to think of something fun for him to do (that he hasn’t done before), and the Seaside Skatepark has caught my eye. Skateboarding is a great activity with the benefits of being active, outdoors, and social.

My only experience with skateboarding was when I was in my early twenties. I had a roommate that had a little skateboard, and she tried to teach me how to ride it. Skateboarding requires balance, and the ability to bounce back when you fall down (which happens when you’re learning how). I hit the Prom a few times (literally) just learning how to coast along. This might be a good time to mention that helmets, and pads for both knees and elbows are recommended (helmets are required if you’re under 16).

The Skatepark (located on Broadway next to Sunset Pool) is open from dawn until 10 p.m. with open access (which means that bikes, scooters, etc. are also allowed). You can get any skateboarding gear you need (and good advice) at both Seaside Surf Shop and Cleanline Surf Shop.

As far as skateboarding goes, I have great balance, but unlike my nephew, I lack the bravery it takes to try any fun tricks, or launch down into the bowl. When you go to the Seaside Skatepark not only can you participate, but it’s also fun to watch kids (and adults) do tricks and seemingly “fly” through the air. There are even restrooms and covered picnic tables there, so you will have most all of the comforts of home.

See you at the Skatepark!
