Seaside Stories

Smoothies, Boba, Floats and Other Specialty Drinks

August 25, 2021 | by Jen Anderson

It’s hot out and you’ve worked up a thirst. Sometimes that plain old water isn’t going to satisfy. Luckily, it’s easy to find delightful thirst-quenching beverages in Seaside for all ages.

Tea Artist

The next-level bubble tea, smoothies, tea-infused drinks and milk tea at Tea Artist (737 Broadway) are ready for their Instagram shot. You can customize your handcrafted drink to your own sweetness and amount of ice, and choose from various flavors of bobas and jellies. Sip your worries away with the matcha smoothie with sea-salt cream or the sparkling-blue butterfly mango strawberry tea, with its rainbow ombre effect in the glass. Founder Yin Na is a certified tea-art specialist and university professor who wrote a book about the tea art of China.

Burly and the Bean

Fancy coffee-drink lovers will be in their element at the Seaside location of Burly and the Bean Coffee Cabin (1545 Roosevelt), owned by couple Justin and Vanessa Boone. With Vanessa’s Mexican-American background, some of the caffeinated concoctions come with a twist, like the Sneaky Diablo (iced Vietnamese coffee, espresso, cinnamon and a dash of hot sauce) and the La Pistola (espresso, white chocolate, Mexican chocolate and cinnamon). Milkshakes, smoothies and classic coffees round out the crave-worthy menu.

MAS Savory

If you haven’t had a mangoneada, you’re in for a real treat. MAS Savory (21 N. Columbia) celebrates tropical fruit with eye-popping mango-based confections that double as a dessert and come in two sizes: mega and crazy. If mango’s not your thing, there are also loaded smoothies, whipped-cream-laden horchatas, Mexican-style shaved ice, and blended drinks based on cotton candy, bubble gum and Gansito (a Mexican chocolate Twinkie). For a lighter option, try the aguas frescas, made from just fruit, water, lime juice and a bit of sweetener.

Sea Star Gelato

Sea Star Gelato — ranked as Oregon’s best ice cream shop — delights fans of all ages with its wild flavors of homemade gelato (Italian ice cream) and sorbetto (a dairy-free, fat-free, vegan version of gelato). Kick it up a notch with a fizzy float — two scoops of gelato with any soda of your choice. Or try an affogato, an Italian dessert drink made up of a scoop of gelato floating in a shot of hot espresso. If you like it a bit lighter, go for the creative gel-latte, a scoop of gelato, steamed milk and espresso. Either way, you’ll satisfy your need for sugar and caffeine at the same time.

Dundee’s

Yes, you’ll find the gamut of fresh doughnuts, cookies, croissants and other baked goods at Dundee’s Donuts (416 Broadway) — we suggest picking up several for the kids. If you’re over 21, though, check out the day-drinking menu (yes, that’s what it’s called) at Dundee’s Bar & Grill, directly adjacent. You’ll find a huckleberry lemonade with vodka, a classic paloma, mimosas, bloody Marys and a truly refreshing grapefruit sparkler. Add a couple bucks to have your drink made with fresh-squeezed juice.

Seaside Slushies & Dogs

The slushies and hot dogs at Seaside Slushies & Dogs (550 Broadway) get top billing, but don’t miss the shave ice. Both the shave ice and slushies come in flavors including pink lemonade, watermelon and pina colada, and you can ask for sugar-free versions, too. Moms and dads in need of a fuel-up may opt for the Red Bull slushie. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Seaside’s historic Promenade by getting your slushie in a Prom Centennial commemorative cup for $15 and reliving your memories at home.
