HISTORY & HOPS
Presented by the Seaside Museum
Thursday, November 20th, 2025, 6PM at Seaside Brewing Co. (851 Broadway)
History & Hops is a series of local history discussions hosted by the Seaside Museum on the last Thursday of each month, September through May, at Seaside Brewing Co. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome to join in the fun!
THE DESDEMONA MYSTIQUE
For this month’s topic, join us for presenters, Lauri Serafin and Eric Wheeler who will share the history on all things Desdemona. The sailing vessel, the wreck, the sands, the lighthouse and the infamous Desdemona Club in Astoria. The presentation begins with the history of “Desdemona”, the bark that wrecked in the Columbia River on the sands later called “Desdemona Sands”. Included is information about the Desdemona Lighthouse and horse seining on the sands. The talk ends with a presentation about the Uppertown Co-op Boarding House (1888) that is now the “Desdemona Club”. The talk is entertaining and well researched.
Eric and Lauri are board members of the Lower Columbia Preservation Society (LCPS). Eric is a local architectural historian, and Lauri is a historic preservation advocate with an interest in historic interior design. Both are active in the historic preservation community and speak frequently for LCPS and Clatsop County Historical Society. They co-host “LCPS Presents”, a lecture series, the second Tuesday of the month at Pacific Distillery in Astoria.
It’s at 6:00 PM on November 20th, 2025, at Seaside Brewing Co. (851 Broadway). Come early to ensure a seat at a table and take advantage of Seaside Brewing Co.’s delicious menu!
History & Hops is supported by the Seaside Museum, the Seaside Public Library, and Seaside Brewing Co.
