Historian/producer Lois Leonard will present the documentary, Finding David Douglas, the story of the remarkable botanist from Scotland who explored western North America, including the Pacific Northwest, in the 1820s and 1830s—a time before white settlement altered the landscape. Today, we widely remember Douglas through the tree named in his honor: the Douglas fir.

Documentary producer Maria Brooks will present her film, The Odyssey of Captain Healy, profiling the life of one of the most famous men on the Pacific Coast during the nineteenth century. As captain of a U.S. Marine Revenue Cutter, Captain Michael Healy stood for law and order along the treacherous 30,000-mile coast of the Alaska territory.

Northwest Coast Native American Carving Class

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is holding a Native American woodcarving class on May 20 to 22, 2016. Students will learn about Northwest Coast Native American designs. Participants can then create their own design or use provided patterns to transfer onto wood. Designs will then be carved and stained or painted. The cost to attend is $65 for museum members and $75 for non-members. No experience is necessary to participate, and tools will be provided.

Brian Schulz of Cape Falcon Kayak will be teaching a 10-day intensive kayak building course at the Barbey Maritime Center. This unique class will be building all five Cape Falcon Kayak designs simultaneously, starting from scratch to finished product, allowing for students to experience both traditional Inuit hunting kayaks as well as modern skin-on-frame design. Healthy Homes 5th Annual 5K Walk/Run

The community is invited to come and support healthy homes and families in Clatsop County at this event to raise awareness of domestic violence. The free 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk will be held at the Barby Maritime Center. Registration starts at 9:30am and the run/walk begins at 10:00am. Light refreshments will be served. All proceeds will benefit survivors of domestic violence.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is offering a class teaching Northwest Native American Weaving. Students will weave a small cedar bark basket. They will learn traditional Northwest plaiting, twill work, working with wet cedar bark, and about how to execute a traditional folded rim.
