History & Hops is a series of local history discussions hosted by the Seaside Museum on the last Thursday of each month, September through May, at Seaside Brewing Co. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

LIBERTY FACTORY: THE UNTOLD STORY OF HENRY KAISER’S OREGON SHIPYARDS

Local maritime historian and author Peter Marsh will present a spirited discussion of his latest book, Liberty Factory. In this book, Marsh tells the story of the ingenuity of Henry Kaiser, a man with barely more than a vision who was able to establish several shipyards in the Portland area during WWII to produce the “Liberty Ship,” a British-designed cargo ship which could be built rapidly using novel mass-production techniques. Peter will talk about why Oregon was a surprising location for these shipyards and the importance they held in wartime efforts.

Peter Marsh was born in Greenwich, Great Britain and moved to the USA in the 1970’s. He has enjoyed a lifetime of Maritime hobbies and work alike and will bring his extensive knowledge and love for the subject to his presentation. Peter has also spent time as a freelance journalist and has covered topics including local maritime interest, fishing, commercial shipping, and more. He has contributed greatly to the development of exhibits at the Hanthorn Cannery Museum at Pier 39 in Astoria. Peter is a man of many talents, interests, and stories, we are looking forward to hearing from him.
