Whether you want to catch air on your mountain bike in Klootchy Creek County Park, rent a four-wheeled surrey for a family ride around town or take a cruiser bike onto the beach for a scenic ride with your pup,  Seaside is your launchpad for a pedal-powered getaway. The town is so bikeable, you can even park your car at the hotel when you arrive and go car-free during your stay. Cycling is a fun and easy way to get around any time it’s not raining, all year round.

Whether you bring your own wheels or rent bikes and gear from Wheel Fun Rentals (which also has e-bikes), Prom Bike Shop or A’s Bike Shop, these tips will keep the good times rolling in Seaside.

Cruise on the Prom and Beach

The flat, paved, 1.5-mile Promenade is ideal terrain for single-speed cruisers and it runs along the beach, connecting the north end of Seaside with the south. Rent a classic cruiser bike and explore downtown’s boutiques, eateries and breweries by pedal power. Take less busy roads like Beach Drive in South Seaside and Downing and Franklin streets in North Seaside to get everywhere you want to go with fewer cars. On the Prom’s north end, you can visit the peaceful estuary and try to spot blue herons and bald eagles. Ride to the Prom’s south end and you can check out the surfers shredding at the Cove or bike to Tillamook Head Trailhead for a hike. 

Feel like riding on the beach? Rent a fat-tire beach cruiser — designed specifically for riding on packed sand — and glide along the waterline, kicking up sea spray. Pick up snacks at Salmon River Smokehouse and cans of craft beverages at Hop & Vine Bottle Shop and Taproom, and ride along the sand until you find the perfect picnic spot. 

For any beach trip, check the tide tables in advance so you can head out at low tide, when there’s plenty of hard sand.

Roll With the Family 

If your whole crew wants to get in on the pedaling fun, three-wheeled Funcycles are available for rent and ideal for sibling speed races on the packed sand. For your littlest ones, kid-size bikes with training wheels and bike trailers are also available for fun family rides along the Prom. 

But perhaps no Seaside family-bike adventure is more memorable than the group surrey ride. You can rent four-wheeled surreys by the hour at Wheel Fun Rentals and Prom Bike Shop. A double surrey has a front and back bench seat and room for up to six adults, plus four sets of pedals, two steering wheels, and a front basket that can accommodate two small children or your fur baby. A triple surrey has room for up to nine adults, so there’s plenty of room for everyone to take turns pedaling and steering as you slowly — and carefully — navigate around Seaside’s side streets and have a blast. 

Hit the Mountain-Biking Trails 

Seaside is one of the Oregon Coast’s top mountain biking destinations, thanks to the Klootchy Creek trails less than 10 miles from downtown off Highway 26. The trail system — developed with the help of the Northwest Trail Alliance — weaves through towering Sitka spruce in the Oregon coastal mountains and offers a mix of adrenaline-pumping descents, technical single-track and skill-building features that are challenging and exciting for all levels. Beginners can start at the main parking area and climb up the easy switchbacks of the GreenWood trail before starting their descent on the smooth and flowy Chris Cross trail. 

Riders should note that a free permit is required to access Klootchy Creek Park. It can be easily obtained online before your ride. It’s also a good idea to check current trail conditions before setting out, as logging efforts underway elsewhere on the property can temporarily close trails.

For a flowy ride on a multiuse loop, take off on the 1.5-mile Ridgeline Trail around Seaside High school, which has a new wooden deck on one of its offshoots, the Stinson Creekside Trail, for even more fun. Note that when school is in session, if you’re not a student or staff, you won’t be able to access the trail on school grounds.
