When it comes to budget-friendly and crowd-pleasing eats on your beach vacation, you can’t go wrong with a well-made sandwich. Here’s where to find six of Seaside’s favorites, as well as many others running the gamut from house-smoked meats to fresh seafood served in creative ways.

Italian Meat Grinder, The Pearl

North of downtown at a cozy bar called The Pearl, you’ll find excellent sub-style sandwiches served with your favorite beverage and views of Neawanna Creek. Visitors from the East Coast swear by the Italian Meat Grinder, a whopper of a sandwich layered high with soppressata, coppa, salami and fresh mozzarella, with vegetable garnishes. Don’t miss the Southern-influenced Cajun shrimp po’ boy or muffuletta with homemade olive spread. All sandwiches are served on toasted rolls made in Oregon by Dos Hermanos Bakery. Gluten-free bread is also available. (Note this spot is for diners 21 and older.)

Albacore Reuben, Relief Pitcher

There’s so much to love about Relief Pitcher, an unassuming local watering hole on the south side of town. There you’ll find a big grassy area where dogs are free to frolic, lawn games and a laid-back vibe. Depending on the day, you might find live music or sports matches on the television. Sit back and enjoy it with the house specialty, an albacore Reuben that substitutes a meaty tuna steak for the usual corned beef. It’s served with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing on rye, plus a side of crispy hand-cut fries. Also worth a try: a pan-fried oyster sandwich and great burgers.

Grilled Cheese for Kids and Adults, Ruby’s

Housed in a repurposed vintage gas station, Ruby’s Roadside Grill offers a range of sandwich options and is the perfect setup if you’re traveling with kids and/or pets. There’s a dog-friendly patio with a gas fire pit and views of the Coast Range. Kids will love the grilled cheese on wheat, and there’s an artisan version that melds cheddar, Swiss and Gouda for grown-ups. Ruby’s makes its own smoked meats, showcased in sandwiches stuffed with flavorful smoked corned beef, thin-shaved prime rib and pulled pork. Be sure to save room for desserts like ice cream sandwiches and floats.

Philly Cheesesteak, Chalkboard Cafe

It takes some courage to bill one of your sandwiches as the “Best Philly Cheesesteak West of Philadelphia,” but Chalkboard Cafe pulls it off. Its scrumptious version is filled with your choice of house-sliced rib-eye, chicken or Portobello mushroom, and topped with cheese, onions and peppers. The final flourish is crazy sauce — a mayo base laced with horseradish, garlic, ketchup and seasonings. If you’re an early riser, stop in for a breakfast sandwich made with homemade Irish soda bagels and regular or gluten-free biscuits. Owners Ken Zittenfield and Angela Dobbins also offer a pay-it-forward program that allows customers to purchase a meal or contribution (which they match) to help feed those in need.

Bahn Mi, Phoholic

As you may guess from the name, Phoholic serves Vietnamese noodle soup, but this homestyle restaurant off Highway 101 is where you’ll also find eight kinds of bahn mi sandwiches. Fusing French and Vietnamese traditions, bahn mi is a type of sub served on a baguette, filled with  a combination of savory and tangy flavors. Protein choices include lemongrass pork, beef, or chicken; tofu; Chinese sausage; pork belly; and barbecue pork. All are cradled in a crisp baguette and topped with tangy pickled veggies, crunchy cucumber and fresh cilantro. Pair it with a Vietnamese coffee or milk tea for a perfect lunch.

Tsunami Pastrami, Tsunami Sandwich Company

Located on lower Broadway near the Prom, Tsunami Sandwich Company is a spotless counter-service sandwich shop that’s been filling hungry bellies for more than 15 years with sandwiches named after coastal locations and weather patterns. Its most popular sandwich is the namesake Tsunami Pastrami, stacked high with a half-pound of tangy pastrami, smothered in Swiss cheese and horseradish sauce, and served hot on marbled rye. You’ll also find hot dogs and warm soups like chili and Ivar’s clam chowder — perfect for a blustery day.
