Tucked away behind the cove on the south side of town, the scenic Seaside Golf Club has been an island of manicured greenery since 1923. This 9-hole course lies at the base of Tillamook Head and is home to some stunning mountain scenery and wildlife (look for the bald eagle nest on the northwest border). The 102-acres of pristine property started out as the venerated land of the renowned railroad tycoon, Ben Holladay, who built a luxurious Italian villa style hotel in 1870 to attract the inland elite (Holladay’s resort also included a racetrack).
One little known fact concerning the Seaside Golf Club is that it was designed by the notable American golfer and golf course architect, H. Chandler Egan. Egan designed other courses such as the Eugene Country Club and the Oswego Lake Country Club, and in 1928 joined forced with celebrated architect Alister MacKenzie to revamp Pebble Beach Golf Links in anticipation of the 1929 U.S. Amateur. Now a long-established recreational hub, one memorable feature (other than the fresh ocean breeze) is that with a powerful backswing, an incorrectly aimed golf ball could land a few blocks west into the sea.
