Lewis and Clark Pop Up Exhibit

At the Lewis and Clark Pop Up Exhibit there will be medicine, trade items, and other artifacts used by Lewis and Clark on display. Special guest interpreters, John Fisher and Garry Bush, Lewis and Clark Historians, will paint a colorful picture of life in the early 1800’s. Among the items on display will be local animal hides and pelts along with game related artifacts with which you can come to understand the amount of effort that was made to keep the group warm and fed with excess to trade with. John will exhibit his personal collection of medicine samples that were mentioned in Lewis and Clark’s journals and would have been used during their time in the area. Other trade items to displayed are rare and valuable blue beads, period piece coins, and other related pieces. Animal fat and oil which were used in oil lamps will also be included in the exhibit as well as local pigments used for paint and dye.

While Lewis and Clark get most of the spotlight, there were almost fifty men enlisted in the Corps of Discovery. One of which was named Toussaint Charbonneau. Although his ‘wife’ is a little more famous. Does Sacagawea ring any bells? Charbonneau was a French-Canadian explorer who joined the efforts of Lewis and Clark and took her as his wife. Interpreter, Garry Bush will be dressed in a close replication of what Charbonneau would have been wearing on the expedition. He will share the stories and artifacts related to the men’s travels.

This presentation is being held at the museum in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Saltmakers event.
