NAKED AND AFRAID IN 1921
The Seaside Museum is kicking off its 10th year of History & Hops. This season is sure to provide an enjoyable time, interesting topics, captivating speakers, and of course, beer. History & Hops is more than just a historical lecture series. It offers locals and visitors an opportunity to mingle in the laid-back atmosphere of the Seaside Brewing Co. and engage in conversations with people from all walks of life brought together by a common interest in history. On September 25th, 2025, Washington State Parks Interpretive Ranger, Aaron Webster will present
“Naked and Afraid in 1921.”
Over 100 years ago, John Knowles pioneered survival-based reality TV as we know it, but he did it in the newspaper. From the Maine woods to the Siskiyou Mountains, and eventually Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, Joe Knowles inspired the nation, created controversy, and made an impact that is still echoing today. In this 40-minute talk we will learn the life story of Joe Knowles and explore how his experience of trying to inspire city folks to get back to nature mirrors our own modern views on how technology has taken over our lives and how we are losing touch with nature.
Aaron Webster works as an Interpretive Ranger for Washington State Parks, currently at Cape Disappointment. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and practicing ancestral skills such as hide tanning and fire making.
Join us at 6:00 PM on September 25th, 2025, at Seaside Brewing Co. (851 Broadway). Space is limited and we recommend arriving early to snag a good seat. There’s plenty to eat and drink and conversate about while you wait for the program to begin.
History & Hops is supported by the Seaside Museum, the Seaside Public Library, and Seaside Brewing Co.
