History and Hops

History and Hops will feature Dan Haneckow on the history of Ben Holladay and why he is significant in Seaside’s beginning as a resort city. Ben Holladay opened Seaside House in 1873 as a luxury hotel in the rustic setting of the Clatsop Plains. For owner Holladay it was a place for relaxation, business, and political intrigue, away from Portland’s prying eyes. Ben Holladay in Seaside tells the story of “The Railroad King of Oregon,” already a nationally famous personality upon his arrival in the state, and the resort that put Seaside on the map. It is a tale of ambition, big dreams, scandal, and the rise and fall of the Gilded Age millionaire that transformed Oregon economically and politically in the 1870s.

This event is the museums annual meeting at 5:30 (open to the public) followed by History and Hops at 6. This is a special night at the historic Times Theater.

History & Hops is a series of local history discussions hosted by the Seaside Museum on the last Thursday of each month, September through May.

The Seaside History Museum is located at 570 Necanicum Drive and is open Wednesday – Saturday, 11 AM – 4 PM.
