I moved to the City of Seaside in 1977 and remember it as a tiny hole-in-the-wall where at 4:30 p.m precisely-everything closed up. What do people do around here besides work and visit the beach once in a while? I thought as I settled into my lonely one bedroom apartment. I'll never be able to stick this out. Hope I can make it a year.
Never say never. My, how this City has grown! Today, thirty-three years later on a drizzly Sunday afternoon, I took my two grandsons to the Prom Bike Shop to get a look at their surreys. Weighing in at three to four hundred pounds each, they resemble horse-drawn, four wheeled carriages with pedals instead of horses. And like a slow moving Amish vehicle, are meant to stay on the road. Proms and sidewalks are not allowed.
Les and Debbie Clark, owners of the Prom Bike Shop for nearly thirty years, and their employee, Andrew Thornton, were very patient in answering my grandsons' questions.
"How fast can they go?," my oldest grandson wanted to know.
"As fast as you can pedal!," Andrew and Debbie said laughing.
The surreys the Clarks rent out came from Italy and are capable of reaching speeds of up to twenty miles per hour. Okay, so if you're not a teenager or early twenty-something, the average speed is about five to eight miles per hour. Don't even ask about a grandma like me.
"Where is the best place to go on a surrey?," my grandson asked.
Debbie suggested driving them to the Cove, a rocky yet stunning stretch of beach on the south end of Seaside. She also suggested the Turn-Around where the Prom meets the ocean at the end of Broadway located in the center of town.
"How many surreys do you own?," our little interviewer then questioned.
The answer? The Clarks have two "really large ones" that hold nine adults and two children, six "medium size" and ten "small ones" which carry one to two passengers each.
So pack up your stuff, round up the kids, and scurry to the Surreys in Seaside. They are great for family activities and parties, and (we discovered) very fun to ride - even on a somewhat drizzly winter day.

Our grandsons keep begging to go back and ride on the surreys.
