FlagCongratulations to the City of Seaside! Seaside was just selected as an All-America City Finalist. The awards event will take place June 15-17 in Kansas City, Missouri. Seaside is among twenty-six finalists from which ten cities will be awarded the prestigious title of “All-America City”.

I learned more about The All-America City application from Stubby Lyons when we talked a few weeks ago. Stubby told me that he had frequently seen the All-America City sign posted in other cities, and he started mentioning it to people on the Seaside City Council. He’s so proud of Seaside, and told me that while he was on vacation in Arizona he was bragging about Seaside to people he met. He knows that Seaside had many qualifying aspects to make it an All-America City, and is a representative on the project.

Once such aspect he told me about was the Tsunami Preparedness Program. Stubby told me that the program was the first project added to the application and a strong basis for the process moving forward. In light of the recent tragedy in Japan, it’s reassuring to know that Seaside is actively preparing for the possibility of a tsunami. Stubby said that the program was put into action during the recent tsunami evacuation. All the departments involved handled things very well during the evacuation, and while they are working to improve a few things, overall he is very proud of the City of Seaside.

He also told me that during the evacuation there were many cars that came up and parked by his house (he lives in an area that is up on higher ground). He opened his home up to people while they were waiting to receive the all-clear signal from the city. He served soft drinks, let them use their restroom, and had a warm place to wait. He said he met new people (including some tourists visiting from Montana). As usual, Stubby was a role model to others; showing kindness, and selflessness when it was needed most.

I mentioned to Stubby that you don’t hear often hear about people opening up their homes in the early morning hours to total strangers. His answer? “Seaside is an All-America City and if we want to be recognized for that, we need to keep acting like that.”

Congratulations, Seaside!
