Now that I’ve got my Frisbee plans set for Spring Break, it’s time to plan my next Spring Break Adventure; biking! I learned to ride a bicycle when I was little, and loved to ride around the neighborhood with my sister, and friends. When I was writing the Prom post, I saw so many people riding bikes along the Prom, and realized how much I missed it! So this year I’ve decided to rent a bike during Spring Break, and ride around Seaside. Here’s some good information I’ve found so that you can plan your Seaside bike trip too.
First, there are tons of benefits to riding a bike! Besides saving gas money, bicycling is a great form of exercise. It’s an aerobic exercise that is good for your heart, blood pressure, and doesn’t stress your knees. It’s also a great calorie burning exercise. Biking is also a great way to relieve stress. You are able to enjoy the scenic views in Seaside as you peddle along.
There are a few rules that you should follow while biking.
In Oregon, bicyclists are required to follow the same rules as motorists as much as they apply;
ride with the normal traffic flow, as far to the right side as possible. Bicyclists may ride two
abreast, but should only do so when it is safe and will not interfere with traffic.
When riding after dark, the bicycle or its rider must be equipped with a white light visible at least
500 feet to the front and a red light or reflector visible at least 600 feet to the rear.
You can find more information in the Oregon Coast Bike Route Online Pamphlet.
A few more safety suggestions to follow during your biking adventures:
Wear bright or light-colored clothing.
Don’t ride in heavy fog. (In summer and fall, the fog usually lifts by late morning).
Wear a helmet (this is required for those under 16 years)
Stop off the roadway.
You can rent bikes at Wheel Fun Rentals and Prom Bike Shop in Seaside. You can rent beach cruisers, tandem bikes, kid’s bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, and more. Rentals can be hourly (starting at $10 per hour), daily, and weekly. They will make sure your bike is road safe and give you a helmet (although it’s not required, it’s recommended to keep you safe).
Now that you know the benefits, the rules, and where to get your bike from, it’s time to know where to go biking. The Seaside Prom is one of the best places to ride: a perfectly paved path right along the Pacific Ocean. They told me at the Prom Bike Shop that it’s a 5-mile loop from their shop to the North End/Seaside Cove.
You can find bike paths at Seaside Naturally. Make sure you grab your camera to snap some scenic Seaside photos, and enjoy your bicycling adventure in Seaside.
