BotI was recently in Los Angeles for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrator’s National Summer Conference. One of our keynote speakers was celebrated children’s author, Gary Paulsen. Paulsen had a rather unsavory childhood but the turning point in his life was when he went to his local library (not to get a book but to stay warm) and the librarian asked him if he wanted a library card. That library card and the librarian handing him book after book helped develop his love of reading and changed his life.

When I heard Paulsen say that I teared up! That is the reason I love libraries! A library can have a huge impact on those they serve and the communities they are in. That’s also the reason that I love sharing what goes on at our own Seaside Library.

The next event there is Saturday August 27th, from 1-3 p.m. Kids 7 and older can make Futuristic Jewelry at the concluding summer children’s activities workshop.

According to Jon Burke, Seaside Library’s Event Coordinator, they’ve had great summer programming with an average of 30 kids in each class. “Probably the most fun was had in the Piñata class as the children got to use a unique variety of mostly recycled materials to make one of a kind Piñatas,” Jon said. “Our next class is Futuristic Jewelry in which a shrinking plastic material is used to create amazing translucent pendants that can go on a necklace or bracelet.”

Jon’s wife, Linda Burke, leads all of the classes and she has been an artist and jeweler for the past 20 years. She loves to share her creativity with kids and looks forward to teaching at the library every summer.

There’s also a GIGANTIC Summer Book Sale from August 26th to September 10th sponsored by the Friends of the Seaside Library. They will have thousands of books on sale and all proceeds help fund the library’s ‘extra-curricular” activities (author and speaker programs, art galleries, kids’ programs, etc.). You can bring cash or check and help support the library with your purchase.

This is the biggest sale they’ve ever had and there will be TONS of books. “The Friends of the Library is a great partner that does SO much for us!” Burke said when asked about the long-standing relationship with the library.

As someone who is passionate about children and adult literacy, I am a HUGE supporter of our library system! Make sure you don’t miss these great events that are just an example of how much of an asset we have in the Seaside Library.

I really started out to say it isn't too soon to think about the Seaside Wine Walk on Nov. 12th, which we love and at which we will be pouring our wine, but then I saw this post and had to add that my very first job was at a library (I was 13), I spent glorious hours in one all my growing up years in Brooklyn, still use one now (in Forest Grove and Cornelius) and think you are doing a great job. Wish I could be there for the book sale.

Paragliding on the North Coast

Discover ParaglidingThis is how the conversation went. “Honey, you know how I said I’d never go bungee jumping, or jump out of a plane? You know the no heights, no falling thing? I’ve changed my mind. How would you feel about paragliding?”

“Paragliding? You mean jump off a cliff?” he asked me incredulously.

“Usually yes, but I just figured out that you can launch right from the beach.”

I’ve always been terrified of heights and also falling from heights. When I climb the steps of the Astor Column I get woozy, so paragliding was never an option for me. But with a boyfriend who likes to white water raft, and live life on the adventurous side, I wanted to have an open mind.

So I talked to Brad Hill, who owns and operates Discover Paragliding along with his wife Maren Ludwig, about how paragliding works. Brad told me that in 1992 (before he knew what paragliding was) he was sitting on the side of a mountain and knew he wanted to glide off the hill, but wasn’t sure exactly how to accomplish it. A few weeks later he saw paragliding on television and said, “That’s it!” Two weeks later he was in a paragliding class.

He and Maren are both master-rated instructors with over 15 years experience training pilots. They brought Discover Paragliding to the coast when a student suggested they check out the beach as an ideal place (they launch from Sunset Beach just North of Seaside for many of their flights).

I told him up front that I was scared of heights and falling. “90% of people who say they are afraid of heights are actually afraid of edges or falling. If you prefer to sit by the window on the airplane to watch the view you aren’t scared of heights,” Brad told me.

For first timers like myself the introductory tandem experience is the best way to go. They launch from the beach and can take you up to 20 feet to start. If you’re OK with that height they can take you up to thirty feet. At 30 feet people usually stop looking at the ground and start enjoying the view. Your flight can go 15-25 minutes depending on weather.

The flights can go up to around 3,000 feet. I was directed to their website to watch videos of flights that truly gave me a better idea of what to expect. There are descriptions of programs they offer, which range from beginner to advance training (and the mountain experience).

Brad and Maren offer a safe environment for all their customers. They have taken up passengers from 3 years old to seniors, paraplegic and even dogs. Talking with Brad and watching their videos has me excited to try paragliding, and with Discover Paragliding’s experience, training and passion for paragliding, I know I’ll be in good hands.

I have been training with Brad and Maren for 2 years. First I got my paragliding 2 rating from them which was the most amazing experience of my life and then continued the addiction by adding powered paragliding 2 certification. They are amazing instructors who really care for their students. You will add one skill at a time as your skills develop. I highly recommend these folks!

Night of All Knowledge

Seaside Public LibraryA few years ago I was in Wellington, New Zealand on vacation (my first overseas trip ever!). I went during their rainy winter season and it was much like the Coast. We had limited entertainment options due to the weather so my friends took me to a Pub Trivia night. It was so much fun! We had a great team, a fun night and ended up winning 2nd place.

I haven’t done anything like that since, so I was thrilled when I found out that the Seaside Library is hosting the Night of All Knowledge Trivia Tournament on Wednesday August 10th, from 6-8 p.m. You don’t have to travel halfway around the globe or be 21 to play! The Night of All Knowledge Trivia Tournament is open to all ages. You can participate as a solo player or have a team up to five people (although you should note that five heads are always better than one in trivia).

Teams can choose a team name and even make up a chant for their teams. Last month’s tournament winners were “The Donner Party Supper Club” and their chant was “We’ll eat them alive.”

I talked with Reita Fackerell, the library’s contact for the event, and she told me that this August’s tournament is their one-year anniversary. “This is a really fun, free event that we do once a month, on the second Wednesday of the month,” Reita said. “We cover different trivia topics such as science, literature, sports, and many more subjects.”

There are also prizes awarded for the winners. Last month was gourmet cupcakes. “The prizes aren’t exciting,” Reita laughed, “but people don’t come for prizes- they come for bragging rights.”

She also told me that once people come for a tournament they want to come back again. The tournament has an 80% returning team rate. The teams have participants who range from high school students to retirees.

The tournament has been so successful that Reita has had two other libraries in Oregon contact her for more information so they can set tournaments up at their libraries.

The event will be held in the Community Room in the Seaside Library. For more information you can visit the library’s webpage or email Reita. The Night of All Knowledge Trivia Tournament will be a great event to show off all your trivia knowledge, meet other trivia enthusiasts and enjoy a free family event.

Have some ideas for creative team names? Please comment and let us know.
